Post-16 Provision at Knightsfield School

At Knightsfield School, we provide a highly personalised Post-16 programme designed to support Deaf young people as they prepare for further education, employment and independent adulthood. Our specialist approach combines academic and vocational opportunities with tailored support, ensuring students can successfully access their chosen pathway while continuing to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of deaf identity.
Deaf Identity and Independence
A key aspect of our Post-16 provision is supporting auditory oral students to develop a positive deaf identity and the self-advocacy skills needed for adult life. Through dedicated sessions and personalised guidance, students explore deaf culture, communication choices, accessing support services, understanding their rights and developing the confidence to advocate for themselves in education, employment and the wider community. These opportunities help students become independent, resilient and proud deaf young adults.
Post-16 Pathways
Students can access a range of Post-16 opportunities depending on their aspirations, strengths and interests. Many students study A Levels and other Level 3 qualifications through our close partnership with Monk’s Walk School Sixth Form or through the Welwyn & Hatfield Consortium. Students seeking more vocational pathways can access Level 1, 2 and 3 courses at Oaklands College across a wide range of subject areas.
Every student’s programme is carefully planned to ensure it is ambitious, appropriate and aligned with their future goals.
Specialist Deaf Support
Our specialist staff work closely with students, families and Post-16 providers to ensure seamless access to learning. Support may include note-taking, communication support, assistive listening technology, liaison with teaching staff and guidance around reasonable adjustments. This enables students to fully participate in lessons while developing the independence required for future study and employment.
Personal Development and Preparation for Adulthood
Students access a bespoke programme at Knightsfield which complements their academic or vocational studies. This may include:
    • Preparation for adulthood and independent living
    • Careers education, guidance and employability skills
    • PSHCE and wellbeing support
    • Support with coursework, assignments and examination preparation
    • GCSE English and Mathematics resit support where required
    • Travel training and community access skills
    • Self-advocacy and communication skills development
Careers and Future Pathways
Preparing students for successful futures is at the heart of our Post-16 provision. Students receive tailored careers guidance to help them explore higher education, apprenticeships, employment and training opportunities. Through work experience placements where possible, employer encounters, careers events and one-to-one guidance with our dedicated careers leader, students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their next steps.
A Supportive Transition to Adulthood
Our aim is to ensure that every student leaves Knightsfield with the qualifications, independence and confidence needed to thrive in their chosen pathway. By combining specialist deaf support with high aspirations and personalised guidance, we empower young people to achieve their ambitions while developing the skills necessary for a successful and fulfilling adult life.
